I do get tired of hearing people speaking about ‘positive only’ training and asking me about our method and if they are positive. I know without a doubt our training is as positive and the fairest dog training available. After all, it is based on the way dogs naturally communicate. Proper communication calms dogs, it makes them feel more secure, less tense and the feeling they are a part of a good family.
I know some might have their doubts. What about those times when a dog runs and hides, what is happening there? The owner may have played too many games of “Trick for Treat.” Dogs just don’t take themselves away from their family because they were refocused or corrected, they also take themselves away from ‘treat only training’ too. How so? Why would a dog run away and hide from its favorite treat? It might run and hide if it wants to avoid being made to sit, go to its crate or go outside etc. It might associate the ‘treat’ with a request to perform a trick because it has learned in the past, its owner has tricked it into performing, so it might go and hide to avoid that happening. We must keep in mind dogs learn by association so we must always be aware of what the environment is like when we are training our dog new behaviors.
So how do we strike a balance and have a well behaved, relaxed and happy dog who is comfortable with being refocused and happy to be obedient? If you think communication is the foundation on which relationships are built upon and you really want to have a positive impact on a life, build your relationship with love, trust and respect all founded upon clear communication. In short, #SpeakDog and change your life.
