This exercise may help teach your dog to stay by your side. Please review the steps in your Training Exercises handout. Distance Control can teach a dog to “go get it” instead of “leave it.” Here’s the difference. When you teach leave it, it must mean the dog is permitted to get things it wants, when it wants unless you say “leave it.” When you teach “go get it” the dog learns it needs permission to go after things. Why is this important? It is important because dogs pick up things that may harm them and it only takes a second! Check out how it is done in the following video.
